Aha Stories

Rice : The grain that is ingrained our DNA

“Amma what’s for lunch?” Rice! “Amma what’s for dinner?” Rice! “Ammaaa…!” This is a standard dialogue through all of my childhood and there were a few unexpected but pleasant surprises in between but this was our way of life. Growing up in a country that is the Second Largest producer of rice in the world and roughly caters to a population of 1.2 Billion people, it comes as no surprise that rice is our staple food.  Rice is like an Andy Warhol painting, it can take any shape and showcases bursts of life, like the multiple hues that just create a virtual explosion in his work. Imagine a simple grain that can be made into a gazillion different dishes and also eaten just simply boiled, in its most simple form. Rice is the crop that is most grown, eaten and celebrated around our beautiful country. You can go to any part of the world but you can never lose this love for rice that is ingrained in our DNA. Rice comes in multiple varieties and there is no dearth of choice in this love story.

Rice can be categorised based on its size, colour, time of cultivation, region it is grown in and the cleaning process that is involved in preparing it for our consumption. Rice goes through multiple stages of cultivation right from planting the saplings, flooding of the field before or after planting and then of course it’s the time to patiently wait for the crop to grow and yield us a good harvest. Rice is grown in varying geographical climes and that determines the quality, variety and the essence that comes with it. You know how they say each rice carries the flavour of the soil it is grown in, it is absolutely true. While commercial rice farming is happening on a large scale it is the heritage rice of specific regions that have resurfaced as is expected in the cycle of life and are greatly valued for their unique taste, aroma and undeniable organic quality.

All good things take time and like the crop of rice takes time to turn into multiple bags of rice that are then transported and sold all over the world. This is truly a beautiful journey and tells a story in itself. Imagine the exotic Seeraga Samba being cultivated in the heavenly fields of Madurai and making its way to your kitchens in the UK.
