Mango Mania
Your guide to Indian Mango varieties
India produces over a thousand mango varieties, but a handful are celebrated enough to be exported worldwide. If you want to buy Indian mangoes online in the UK, here’s what you need to know before choosing.
Alphonso (Hapus) Mango
Widely considered the finest mango in the world, the Alphonso mango is grown almost exclusively in the Konkan coast districts of Ratnagiri and Devgad, Maharashtra.
The flesh is deep saffron-orange, virtually fibreless, with a honey-sweetness and floral fragrance that no other variety matches. Look for yellow skin with a slight reddish blush, a sign of natural ripeness.
Season runs April–June.
Kesar Mango
Named for its saffron-coloured flesh, the Kesar mango comes from the Girnar hills around Junagadh, Gujarat.
It’s sweeter and slightly less fibrous than Alphonso, with a rounder shape and a thicker skin. Kesar is the mango of choice for aamras, mango lassi, and ice cream.
Season: April–July.
Badami / Banganapalli Mango
Himayat/Imampasand
Imampasand, also called Himayat or Himam Pasand, is grown across parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. It is loved for its rich aroma, thin skin, smooth pulp and high flesh-to-seed ratio. With its delicate sweetness and soft, almost fibre-free texture, it is excellent for fresh eating, lassi, mango desserts and special summer treats.
Often considered a connoisseur’s mango, Imampasand is a seasonal favourite for those who enjoy a softer, richer mango experience.
Rasalu
A much-loved mango from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Rasalu is known for its juicy pulp, natural sweetness and soft, slurpy texture.
It is especially popular for eating fresh, making mango juice, aamras, milkshakes and traditional summer desserts. Available in varieties such as Chinna Rasalu and Pedda Rasalu, it is a favourite for those who enjoy mangoes that are sweet, aromatic and full of juice.
Rasalu is ideal for anyone who loves a mango that feels generous, messy and deeply satisfying.

Unripe mangoes take about 3-5 days to become ripe at room
temperature. If you can control your craving, then ripe mangoes

Softly press the part near the stem. If the top part of the mango is
soft, it indicates that the mango is ripe. Ripe mangoes also tend
to release a stronger and sweeter aroma.
Alphonso mangoes are mostly fibreless and have saffron-deep flesh. They are floral, with a buttery sweetness. They are best consumed directly and used to make milkshakes and aamras.
Kesar mangoes are deep orange and intensely aromatic. They’re great for pulp, milkshakes, and fresh eating. Kesar is more widely available than Alphonso.
Badami mangoes are large, mildly sweet, with smooth flesh.
They’re ideal for families wanting generous portions at a great price.
